.. _TitCase20161128: Case: 28 November 2016 ================================== Summary ------- Open cell event with a mixture of warm rain clouds and deeper cells having tops above the melting level Description ----------- This was an open cell event that followed a frontal passage over the primary Azores region taking place on the previous day. The low-level winds were northerly and light (>10 kts) during the early hours of this event, and increased and shifted northeasterly to approx. 30 kts throughout this day. The cloud cells as viewed from SEVIRI were relatively smaller and widely dispersed spatially, with suggestions of light drizzle according to KAZR radar overpasses at the ENA main site. The melting level was at approx. 2 km AGL throughout the event, which was roughly 1.0 km below the observed cloud top heights through much of this event. However, the melting level gradually increased towards the tail end of this event, thus later open cells (those after 18 UTC) primarily suggest those having warm rain processes. Available assets ---------------- Standard ARM profiling assets, SEVIRI. Additional NPOESS validation radiosonde (04:00 UTC on 28 November 2016) Critical period: 05:00-21:00 ---------------------------- Widespread open cells with tops above the melting level .. figure:: images/enalasso_obs-aqua-pm-modis-vis_20161128.jpg :name: FigCase20161128 :align: center :alt: True color MODIS AQUA :figclass: align-center True color afternoon MODIS AQUA image with overlaid LES domains.
